Horses

At Bluebird Lane, we are all about the horses! We take much pride and pleasure in our horses, our foals, and our breeding and training programs. Horses, and working with horses, is our way of life, and we enjoy the opportunity to keep up with the horses we sell, and give continued follow-on support to their owners.

Our Horses

Our herd of Fjord horses usually numbers between six and twelve individuals. Besides Mogly and our core group of mares, we generally have young horses we are bringing along, and some sales prospects in the works.

Each horse at Bluebird Lane is a treasured individual, and we keep a small enough herd that we are able to handle, work with, and know and influence the personality, preferences, and ins-and-outs of each and every horse.

Our Foals

We are so proud of the accomplishments of our Bluebird Lane foals. These include numerous Championships in both Fjord and Open Shows throughout North America, top scores at Breed Evaluations, top performances in riding, driving, and light draft work, and hours of enjoyment in pleasure and trail work.

We salute their owners, and know that the potential these foals offer could only be realized through the diligent efforts of their owners. We are well aware that plenty of “wet saddle pads” go into making manifest the hopes and dreams embodied in these fuzzy balls of cuteness!

Bluebird Lane foals have a proven, careful breeding system behind them, which gives them the physical and mental characteristics to become top performance horses and treasured friends for their owners.

Breeding Program

After fifteen years of breeding in our select program, we have produced a relatively small number of foals, but a large representation in the top echelons of both the Fjord and the performance world.

The foundation of our program is based on our mares. We are in agreement with those experienced horsepeople who believe that 60% of the foal comes from the mare. Our experience has certainly borne out the importance of the mare’s contribution to the offspring!

And the quality of our mares has inspired us to seek out only the best-of-the-best for our girls! After selling our previous stallion Felix — known world-wide for the quality of his offspring — we launched an international search for a stallion to take our program to an even higher level! We found everything that we were looking for, and more, in the German-bred and Approved breeding stallion Mogly (Ster, Prestatie).

Training Program

At Bluebird Lane all of our horses are trained by Lori. Training begins at birth and continues with age-appropriate training for all. Our horses are handled daily, and taught to be mannerly, attentive, and responsive.

Riding training generally starts at four years of age, depending on physical and mental maturity. Our young horses are taught to go freely forward with our long-term emphasis being on the systematic development of the six principles of the training scale: relaxation, rhythm, contact, impulsion, straightness, and collection.
